

Individuals who want to stop smoking can get help with the “Freedom From Smoking” classes offered by Oak Valley Hospital and the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency. Persons interested in learning more can attend an orientation session on July 5 at 5:30 p.m. in Oakdale.
The 8-week program follows the American Lung Association format and focuses on long-term freedom from smoking. Each session covers a different topic such as how to prevent and manage possible relapse and stress management skills. "Quit Day" is on the third class meeting.

Four high school students were each awarded a $500 scholarship by the Oak Valley Hospital (OVH) Volunteers. The recipients were Amanda Fischer and Kyle Jones from Oakdale High School, Joel Alacraz from Escalon High School, and Karen De La Torre from Riverbank High School. Fischer, Jones and Alacraz aspire to become physicians while De La Torre’s goal is to become a nurse.
Two Oak Valley Hospital District (OVHD) employees also received assistance from the volunteers to continue their studies in the healthcare field. Lorena Burkett and Heather Friedberg each received a $500 scholarship. Each has the goal of becoming a registered nurse.

Recognizing the need of our communities to have access to sleep disorder studies and treatment, Oak Valley Hospital District is pleased to announce the opening of its Oak Valley Sleep Center in Oakdale. We have partnered with Robert Monie, MD, who has more than 30 years of experience in pulmonary medicine and will serve as the medical director. The Oak Valley Sleep Center offers a range of sleep disorder services in a comfortable, calming setting for patients.
Patient appointments are available for Monday and Thursday evenings starting May 27. Sleep is vital to our health. In fact, lack of sleep can negatively impact our health, leading to serious accidents and illness. If you are having trouble with sleep, ask you physician about the services at the Oak Valley Sleep Center.

Three non-profit groups received grants as part of the Oak Valley Hospital District / Catholic Healthcare West Grants Program. Grants were awarded to non-profit organizations that provide needed health and human services and improve the quality of life within the OVHD service area. The announcement of the grant recipients was made during a luncheon held in January. Receiving grants were the Children’s Crisis Center Guardian Home in Oakdale, Oakdale Community Aquatic Therapy Foundation and the Senior Outreach Program of the Oakdale Police Department. The grants program is part of the hospital district’s and CHW’s community benefits initiative. More than $3.6 million was awarded through grant program for the 2009 grants cycle.
Oak Valley Hospital District recognized the service of 64 employees during its annual service awards luncheon held Jan. 21. Employees with five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service were thanked with special certificates, pins, and awards. The 64 employees represent a combined 560 years of service to OVHD and to the health care of the community.
