Job Description

Reporting to the Nurse Manager of the assigned area, performs duties under the general direction and supervision of the Nurse Manager or Registered Nurse.  Responsible for providing high quality individualized basic care activities within the scope of practice.   The OR Tech is an individual who has received basic education and training to qualify to function in delineated areas of patient care in the Operating Room as an assistant to the RN/MD (surgeon).

  1. Maintains a safe environment utilizing good technical and aseptic practices.  Assists with the positioning and transfer of patients.
  1. Reports findings and observations to the RN in an accurate and timely manner.
  1. Assists with room setup and turnover to provide timely and complete supply/equipment management. 
  1. Assists in care and handling of instruments. Ensures equipment is in working order.  Independently utilizes basic equipment and supplies, demonstrating familiarity with equipment and supplies, is aware of equipment and supply locations.
  • Assembles and re-sterilizes surgical instrumentation.  Ability to reassemble, set-up, package, wrap and sterilize instruments, trays, equipment, etc. utilizing recipes for accuracy.  Accurately labels all items processed.
  • Practices proper aseptic techniques.  Wears personal protective equipment per policy.  Demonstrates knowledge of when biological are required per policy and procedure.  Demonstrates knowledge of proper sterilization procedure for each item handled.
  • Responsible for identifying items and the department they belong to and routing them to the proper areas.  Works in an efficient and timely manner.  Detail oriented.  Selects and processes instruments for daily surgery schedule as needed.
  • Works with Orthopedic Representative(s) and others to coordinate loaner instrumentation for surgery cases.
  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of instruments and equipment.
  • Responsible for documenting needed implants, instruments, etc. so they can be ordered.
  • Picks supplies and instruments for cases.  Responsible for proper instruments and supplies being placed on carts. Properly puts instruments and equipment away as needed. Responsible for notifying appropriate people when items needed are not available.  Checks, restocks and rotates trays, instruments and supplies in Sterile Storage Room



Job Requirements

Minimum Education:
High school graduate or equivalent required
Minimum Experience/Skills:
Minimum of six (6) months’ experience in an acute care surgery department preferred
Able to perform basic mathematical calculations
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Current AHA BLS
