Respiratory Therapist (Oakdale) - Per Diem

Job Description

The Respiratory Care Practitioner assists the Assistant Respiratory Manager in developing, implementing and controlling the provisions of the therapeutic and diagnostic patient care services in accordance with the policies of the hospital district and the directives of the medical staff.  This position performs all the duties as defined by the State of California Respiratory Care Practice Act, which coincide with the policies of OVHD.

  1. Collaborates in developing, implementing and evaluating individualized plan of care, education and discharge plans for patient/family and/or significant other, based on identified patient needs and department standards.  Participates in interdisciplinary patient care conference.
 
  1. Documents in a clear, accurate, legible, organized and timely manner, assignments, treatments given, and patient response.  Always verifies patient’s identification/ID band before treatments and procedures are done.
 
  1. Performs efficiently in emergency situations following guidelines and established department standards providing airway management patients.  Demonstrates the ability to safely and competently provide care in emergency situations and follows appropriate Code Blue notification procedures.  Effectively prioritizes clinical interventions and care.
 
  1. Assists with bronchoscopies and performance of bedside pulmonary function screens.  Assists in care of the trauma patient’s respiratory care.
 
  1. Checks assigned area for completeness of emergency equipment and supplies.  Verifies complete stocking of supplies.  May be required to assist in stocking of respiratory equipment.  May be required to be accountable for equipment room work.
 
  1. Discards disposables and returns dirty equipment to Respiratory Care Department cleaning areas.  Wipes down ventilators after discontinuation and returns to department.
 
  1. Cooperates with other personnel in a positive manner to achieve departmental and interdepartmental objectives and maintains good employee relations.
 
  1. Demonstrates responsibility for cost containment, conservation of supplies and equipment, as well as other organizational resources.
 
  1. Communicates accurately and clearly to patients, physicians and co-workers.  Performs accurate report to oncoming respiratory personnel at shift change.  Communicates pertinent data and information to physicians and nursing.
           
  1. Ability to perform therapeutic/diagnostic interventions according to OVHD policies and procedures, including, but not limited to:
  • Ventilator set-up and operation
  • Ventilator troubleshooting
  • ETT Care
  • Weaning and extubating
  • Oxygen set-up/administration
  • Arterial blood gas sampling/analysis
  • Pediatric heel sticks/capillary blood draws
  • Aerosol medications (nebulizer treatments)
  • Incentive spirometry
  • Postural drainage/percussion.
  • Humidification therapy
  • Suctioning (oral and ETT)
  • Pulse oximetry set-up/monitoring
  • Sputum induction
  • Intubation/Extubation (if trained and qualified)
  • Oral airway management
  • Pulmonary function testing
  • Brochoscopy assist
  • EKG’s (if trained and qualified)
  • Flowbag/ pre-post bronchodilator/ bedside screening
 
  1. Ability to safely and competently use equipment in the delivery of patient care.
  • Obtains necessary training prior to initial equipment use.
  • Assures equipment is in operating order prior to use.
  • Uses the following equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s operating instructions.  Including but not limited to:
  • Pediatric Mist Tents
  • Oxygen administration devices
  • Compressed air/gas tanks
  • Pulse oximeters
  • Suction equipment (wall/portable)
  • Arterial blood gas analyzers
  • Bipap ventilator
  • Ventilators
 

 

 

Job Requirements

Minimum Education:
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Completion of an AMA approved course in Respiratory Care or equivalent
One year experience in labor and delivery preferably with caesarian sections
           
Minimum Experience/Skills:
Ability to read, write, hear and verbally communicate in English to the degree necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Able to perform basic mathematical calculations
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
 
Licenses/Certificates/Credentials:
Possession of a current Respiratory Care Practitioner license issued by the State of California Respiratory Care Board. 
A Registered Respiratory Therapist certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) Preferred
Possess and maintain current PALS, ACLS, BLS, and NRP certification.
Registered with the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) preferred
Membership in the California Society for Respiratory Care (CSRC) preferred
Membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) preferred
 
Physical Demands:
